SIGNPOSTING

Transitional statement which allows the doctor to signal a change in direction, and move from one section of the consultation to another.

 It is the twin statement of SUMMARISING.

 Benefits.

·        the patient knows where the doctor is going and why

·        the doctor shares his thoughts and plans with the patient

·        permission seeking - promotes rapport

·        consultation is structured overtly for both patient and doctor

·        uncertainty is reduced on both sides

·        collaboration is promoted

·        mutually common ground is established

 It can be used: 

·        to move from the beginning of the consultation into information gathering

·        open to closed questions

·        eliciting specific answers to questions on ideas, concerns and expectations

·        moving on to the examination

·        moving into explanation and planning
